Guiding us through the milestones of Israeli history, Gordis relays the drama of the Jewish people's story and the creation of the state. Though Israel's history is rife with conflict, these conflicts do not fully communicate the spirit of Israel and its people: they give short shrift to the dream that gave birth to the state, and to the vision for the Jewish people that was at its core. We cannot answer these questions until we understand Israel's people and the questions and conflicts, the hopes and desires, that have animated their conversations and actions. Why does such a small country speak to so many global concerns? More pressingly: Why does Israel make the decisions it does? And what lies in its future? Israel is a tiny state, and yet it has captured the world's attention, aroused its imagination, and lately, been the object of its opprobrium. The first comprehensive yet accessible history of the state of Israel from its inception to present day, from Daniel Gordis, "one of the most respected Israel analysts" ( The Forward) living and writing in Jerusalem.

Herman Daly's Pyramid shows that the purpose of the economy should be to bring people happiness. The daughter of British painter David Ashwell and Shabby Chic designer Rachel Ashwell, Lily spent much of her California-based childhood visiting family across the pond. "I like the idea of clothes being really special and knowing that not hundreds of people are going to have them, so there's a very limited number of everything." It was time her spent in England that got Lily interested in all things vintage the self-proclaimed "strange hoarder of beautiful things" turns to the extensive vintage collection she's now amassed for inspiration. So she turned to deadstock fabric - which she printed over - and lace - used as trim - to make old things new again. "I don't like seeing the waste of materials and the waste of hard work that goes into a lot of fashion collections these days," she explains. The 25-year-old just debuted a feminine holiday collection, the first under her eponymous label, that proves her goods are more than meets the eye. It's the way she holds herself (delicately), the way she speaks (softly), and the way she designs (dreamily). Lily Ashwell has an ethereal quality about her. Lavinia’s inner strength emerges in dreamlike “conversations” with the poet who created her, and in her intuitive understanding of her father’s just rule, her husband’s justifiable ambitions and her own unending obligations. Though this unlikely heroine receives only token mention in Virgil’s original, Le Guin brings her to vibrant life as a dutiful virgin whose world is circumscribed by daily routines who is the uncooperative cynosure of several suitors’ eyes and who eventually distances herself from the misrule of her stepson Ascanius (Aeneas’s successor), biding her time until the new metropolis of Rome is made worthy of its intrepid founder. But omens decree otherwise, and Lavinia weds Trojan warrior-adventurer Aeneas, a bereaved and conflicted husband, son and father who will, over the years, earn the initially reluctant Lavinia’s undying respect and love. The story is that of the eponymous princess of Latium (a royal city before Rome existed), promised by her parents, King Latinus and Queen Amata, to neighboring Rutilian king Turnus (who is Amata’s nephew). Le Guin ( Powers, 2007, etc.) departs from her award-winning fantasy and science-fiction novels to amplify a story told only glancingly in Virgil’s epic The Aeneid. She befriends the wrong people, members of another gang, and every bad choice she makes drags the family into her dangerous world. When things get too heavy, and lives are at stake, the three girls head for LA seeking a better life.īut trouble always follows Lucy. It is an odd irony that a firestorm of controversy surrounded the book’s publication because of (now New York based) Franzen’s declining to appear on that organ of Middle America, “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”įranzen begins with a portrait of an aging couple, Alfred and Enid Lambert, in a malaise of retirement. At its core, this is a family novel, but the generational and regional East Coast/Midwest differences within the Lambert family also sketch American society at the end of the twentieth century. But between these lies the conflict and it allows Franzen to highlight fissures in American society. While the three main characters are well-spoken East Coast professionals, their parents’ Midwestern, mid-century worldview is also charitably represented. The Corrections admirably portrays the values of both contemporary American yuppies and their square parents.
